Dealing with infectious respiratory diseases in pets can be challenging for veterinarians and other pet professionals. Pets suffering from infectious respiratory disease create a source of stress for both pet owners and veterinarians. An outbreak of a respiratory pathogen is very disruptive to businesses involved with caring for groups of animals. This disruption of business has both direct financial impacts and indirect impacts that are associated with business disruption. Respiratory diseases also represent a serious health risk to our pets.
Many of the principals for preventing and limiting the spread of infectious respiratory diseases are similar in veterinary and human medicine. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the news cycles and disrupted the lives of everyone around the globe. With media focus placed on the hopes of developing an effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 virus, our veterinary clients have clearly seen the importance of vaccination as a tool for respiratory disease prevention.
The concepts and terminology associated with epidemiology relate to containing the spread of respiratory pathogens in dogs and other animals as well as in humans. Much of this terminology has now become a part of everyday conversation when discussing the COVID-19 pandemic. In this presentation, we will examine how the concepts and terminology associated with the discussions involving COVID-19 also apply to highly contagious respiratory pathogens in dogs, such as canine influenza.
